Snarky, tomboyish, and often frustratingly difficult, Andrea McKenna is the unlikely protégé of Marion Ellis. She comes from a family of artisans; her mother even owns a consignment gift shop in order to display and sell the family’s artwork as well as the work of other artists. Andrea also has two older brothers—one of whom is not artistic in the least—and a father, who’s a carpenter, but nevertheless, Andrea spent a good deal of her childhood alone as a “latch-key kid.” During that lonely period, Andrea took up the hobby of puppet making, designing her own make-believe “friends.”
With a strong sense of right and wrong, as well as a general uneasiness around others, Andrea has developed a dislike of people. As a self-described “misanthrope,” Andrea is rather ill suited to Marion’s idealistic mission. However, since her family has been struggling financially, Andrea has taken a job with Marion anyway in order to earn some money for her family. Also, since her parents can’t afford to send her to college, Andrea hopes to save up enough money to pursue her dream of becoming a puppet-maker in the fashion of someone like Jim Henson.
As for shapeshifting, Andrea discovered her ability at age eight and often got into trouble by abusing her power. Currently, Andrea is one of only a couple of new-generation shapeshifters, and the only shapeshifter in the McKenna family. Though she is presently studying under Marion, one of the best shapeshifters around, Andrea’s shapeshifting skills are still a bit unrefined. She’s not without her own talents, however, as her small size and young age allow her to shapeshift into children, something even Marion can’t do.
