The antithesis to Andrea, Joia is amiable, upbeat, and wants very much to be liked by others. She’s also a vegan. She was born shortly after her parents emigrated to the U.S. from Brazil. Tragically, Joia’s mother died in an accident while Joia was still just a baby, and her father Jose was forced to care for her on his own. But it wasn’t long before Jose met and befriended Marion, who began helping him care for his infant daughter—babysitting, shopping for her, etc. Eventually, Marion became Joia’s godmother.
Since her father owns a restaurant, Caipora, and is always working, Joia is often on her own. This situation is part of what led to her to take a job as Marion’s assistant/secretary, though her true desire is to become a yoga instructor. Nevertheless, Joia has vowed to work for Marion until Marion retires, and in the meantime is taking some college courses online. Her current goal is to get the ever-antisocial Andrea to warm up to her.
